Remediation Strategy

Part IIA

Remediation Options Appraisal

Innovative £2m Saving Solution

THE CHALLENGE

IKM was initially asked to review a proposed remediation strategy for a gasworks that had been identified as a source of groundwater and possible surface water pollution, a potential risk to adjacent property and was occupying a prominent position in a town centre / shore front regeneration area.

THE SOLUTION

IKM reviewed the existing remediation proposals, along with the extensive site investigation and risk assessment documentation associated with the site and quickly identified a number of issues that could lead to a more focussed and site specific remediation strategy.

Technical review of the remediation requirements required a blend of qualitative and quantitative risk assessment, practical experience of available remediation techniques and their interaction with redevelopment works and an appreciation of the current regulatory approach to contaminated land management.

Revised remediation proposals were then drawn-up and presented to the regeneration project team, local authority planners and environmental regulators. An outline remediation strategy and Bill of Quantities was also prepared and shared with selected specialist contractors so that new cost estimates could be developed, resulting in a robust remediation scheme that addressed identified water pollution and human health / property risks, whilst also identifying cost savings of up to two million pounds over the existing strategy.
