THE CHALLENGE

IKM completed an Environmental Appraisal to support a Planning Application to extend an existing sand and gravel quarry operation. The local Planning Authority requested that such an assessment be completed to assess the potential impact of the proposed extension.

THE SOLUTION

IKM undertook a preliminary ecological assessment, detailed site walkover, archive review and consultations with regulators to inform the Environmental Appraisal. The appraisal did consider the impacts of the existing quarry operations alongside the proposed extension in terms of:

  • Landscape and visual impact;
  • Impact on local ecology and protected species;
  • Recreation and access;
  • Environmental (statutory) nuisance – noise, vibration, dust, lighting;
  • Impact on the water environment;
  • Impact on the historical environment;
  • Transportation and roads.

The appraisal identified some marginal potential impacts that might arise as a result of the quarry operations being extended. A set of robust mitigation measures were recommended to minimise the overall impact of the proposal. This included a restoration and aftercare plan for both the existing quarry and the proposed quarry extension.

In August 2016, the client received Planning Permission to extend the existing quarry operations.
