THE CHALLENGE

IKM was responsible for the project management and supervision of a substantial site investigation at the Sullom Voe Terminal (SVT) in Shetland. The site presented substantial challenges.

THE SOLUTION

Investigation techniques included percussive soil boreholes, rotary drilling, trial pits, in-situ and field testing, and soil, groundwater and gas monitoring, sampling and testing.  In addition, IKM carried out detailed interpretation of aerial photographs to assess the area of a suspected landfill site; assessments of UXO risk; topographical surveying works of the proposed pipeline route and proximal watercourses and GPR surveying works for underground services.

IKM also fulfilled the role of Principal Designer (formerly CDM co-ordinator). IKM was responsible for the notification of the works to the HSE.  IKM also produced a number of documents:

  • Project Execution Plan
  • Health, Safety, Security & Environment Plan
  • Quality Plan
  • Method Statement documentation, including risk assessments and COSHH
  • Health and Safety File

The objectives of the project applicable to the intrusive ground investigation phase were agreed with BP as follows:

  • Deliver HSSE excellence
  • Deliver a safe and innovative design and quality build, utilising standardisation where possible to achieve the required levels of reliability, availability and operability
  • Starts-up and stays-up
  • Efficient execution without compromising HSSE or quality
  • Deliver on time and budget
  • Deliver a robust solution that meets the needs of key Stakeholders
  • Manage the impact to existing operations
