Commonwealth Games Shooting Centre

Habitat Translocation

ECoW

Regulator Liaison

THE CHALLENGE

IKM was appointed to provide Environmental and Ecological support for the construction of the shooting venue for the 2014 Commonwealth Games.  Due to the legalities of the firearms being used, there were limited locations in Scotland where the event could be held, with the Barry Buddon MoD training camp being the most appropriate location. The site forms part of Barry Links Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) for the valuable plants and sand dune habitats that the site supports.

THE SOLUTION

IKM provided a team of ECoWs during the construction, operation and reinstatement of the site. The ECoWs advised on silt mitigation and pollution control during the earthworks and provided environmental advice to site teams. The development required a large-scale habitat translocation to ensure that the valuable SAC habitats were protected. The ECoWs supervised the habitat translocation and reinstatement to ensure that the habitats, including sand dunes, were protected and reinstated successfully, to the approval of SNH.  The project required working closely with SNH and the MoD.
